Exercise helps keeps the mind sharp too

05 May 2017

We all know that moderate exercise is good for the body but a new study proves it is good for the brain too.

And as being outdoors in green spaces are known to be good for our mood and well being, instead of joining a gym, why not get down to your local park to get your weekly exercise in.

Recent research showed that thinking and memory skills were most improved when people exercised their heart and muscles regularly, even in those that were already showings signs of cognitive decline in older age.

But taking up exercise, whatever your age is proved to be worthwhile for both the mind and body. NHS guidelines suggest we do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week and exercise our major muscles on two or more days a week. But even if you can't manage this, everything we can do will help - every 10 minutes of exercise provides some benefit.

Some parks have outdoor gym equipment installed, others run outdoor classes such as T'ai Chi and others have running groups. But a simple walk, jog or cycle round the park is also great exercise. It doesn't need to be a race or a struggle - you should be still able to hold a conversation whilst doing moderate exercise.

We don't need an excuse to get out to enjoy our local parks - but here is another great reason. So why not get out this weekend to enjoy yourself in the park - you'll be helping your mind and body too.
