Jesmond Dene
Jesmond Dene is a steep sided wooded valley located less than one mile from the city centre of Newcastle. The park was originally the garden of the famous industrialist Lord Armstrong who gifted the park to the citizens of Newcastle in 1883.
The park underwent a major restoration as part of the Parks for People Heritage Lottery scheme with an investment of £6 million. Capital work was completed in 2010. A new building was built close to Pets Corner and offices for staff. Pets Corner has been re-designed and rebuilt and houses a number of animals including birds, pigs and goats.
A new entrance was also created on Benton Bank with a new path leading to Colemans Field via a new bridge. The project has also funded the restoration of the path network, fencing and railings. New seating have been installed as well as signage, way marking and interpretation panels.
Jesmond Dene, is now managed by Urban Green Newcastle, a new independent and innovative charity set up in April 2019 to manage and protect 33 parks and 64 allotment sites in Newcastle.
