Abney Park

Abney Park is Hackney’s peaceful woodland oasis, a nature reserve and place of remembrance.
One of London’s “Magnificent Seven” Victorian garden cemeteries, it was created in 1840 by a private company as a cemetery, botanical garden and arboretum.
Now a Grade II listed historic park, site of metropolitan interest for nature conservation (SINC) and Hackney's longest standing designated local nature reserve, it remains the final resting place of around 200,000 people who lived and worked in Hackney and nearby. No longer a working cemetery, it is a place for everyone to walk, relax, reflect, explore, enjoy nature, and learn about Hackney’s history. Thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, the park has been restored. In addition to restoration of its listed entrances, lodges and mortuary chapel, a new cafe, community space and artisan workshops have been added to improve the visitor experience for local park users and tourists alike.
