Belle Vue Park, Newport

100 years after it opened Belle Vue Park was in urgent need of repair due to general deterioration and vandalism. In 1996 CADW gave the pavilion, conservatories and terracing Grade II listed status, and then the gates, gate piers, lodges and Rustic Tea house in 2000. Newport County Borough Council commissioned consultants to submit proposals to restore the Park to the Heritage Lottery Fund. This bid was successful and in 2002 the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded £1.5 million towards the restoration of the park. The project began with the installation of a new children's' play area in 2002. The restoration project has aimed to retain and enhance the original character and features of the park, providing a green open space for modern needs whilst respecting the historic fabric and integrity of Thomas Mawson's original design. The restored pavilion and conservatories officially opened in September 2006, now form a popular venue for a range of events including community learning classes, business meetings, training events, community events, and exhibitions by local artists. New furniture has been provided throughout the park, and two new tennis courts and a new multi-use games area provide sporting opportunities for people of all ages. The new Friary Garden with its Edwardian pergola provides the perfect sitting area for quiet contemplation. The cascade area and rockery are the other areas in the park where choice tree, shrub, and herbaceous plantings delight the green-fingered visitor to the park. The pavilion and conservatories are licensed for weddings and civil partnerships.
