King George Recreation Ground
The development of King George Recreation Ground, which was formerly countryside, has taken place in two phases - in 1911 and 1926. Much of the natural history has been retained with field boundaries, ridge and furrow, ancient hedgerows and wildflower meadows. The addition of a café, play area, multi sports area, tennis courts (refurbished 2023), outdoor table tennis tables, fitness equipment and a splash-park (refurbished 2025), have increased the attractions in the Recreation Ground. Further capital works are planned to rebuild the café/toilets and upgrade a range of existing facilities/infrastructure.
Proof of King George Recreation Ground’s success is to see it busy at all times of the day - dog walkers strolling through in the early morning, children playing in the splash park, families enjoying the fantastic food in King George Café, bowlers decked out in their white and grey livery playing at the Bowls Club, people of all ages improving their health using the fitness equipment and playing table tennis, and teenagers playing football in the multi sports area. Major improvements are planned later in 2026, including a new café building and upgrading of the play area.
The range of events held in the park during 2025 included Movies in the park, an Easter Egg hunt, VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations, Festival in the Park featuring music, food and drink and craft stalls, children’s fun and craft days, dog shows, weekly health walks, a regular fun fair, celebration of Shavuot and the Jewish New Year, and a Halloween Trail.
