Port Sunlight Village

Port Sunlight is one of the finest examples of early urban planning in the UK. The founder, William Lever created a garden village of outstanding beauty and character. Over 900 houses, almost all of which are Grade II listed, were built in a parkland setting of 130 acres where 2 sections of the landscape are registered.

The village is a popular tourist destination where over 300,000 visitors enjoy the open nature of the landscape and architecture each year.

The landscape is managed by Port Sunlight Village Trust which also provides numerous visitor and resident facilities including a museum, informative interpretation panels, noticeboards and historic finger pointer signs to inform way-finding. The Trust also employs a security firm and litter collectors to ensure a satisfactory visitor experience.

The in-house gardening teams recycle material wherever possible such as arisings from pruning which are chipped and reused as mulch on shrub beds. Refuse removed from site is handled and recycled by specialist contractors.

The whole site is one of Wirral’s finest conservation areas and is an important part of our national heritage. A Conservation Management Plan (CMP) and Estate Management Plan (EMP) have been completed for the village and its landscape.

The Trust encourages community involvement through volunteering and a Community Hub which opened in 2017. As part of this engagement, residents are given the opportunity to participate in the community allotment. The annual Garden Competition, which inspires residents to care for and maintain their gardens, celebrated its 92nd anniversary in 2020.
