Highgate Wood
Originally part of the Bishop of London's hunting park, Highgate Wood covers some 28 hectares, and came into the Corporation of London's ownership in 1886. The Site is still owned and managed by the City of London, who are responsible for the ongoing care of over 4000 hectares of open space in and around London. Predominantly an oak and hornbeam wood, it is also home to numerous other tree and shrub species which have been planted or seeded here. Small areas are fenced off to encourage natural regeneration. The bird population has increased dramatically in recent years, both in types and numbers - some 70 different species have been recorded, alongside the 7 species of bat, 482 species of moth, and 900 different invertebrate species Alongside the football and cricket facilities, Highgate Wood offers visitors a children's playground, a popular café and an information centre with booklets, newsletters and trail guides. Well behaved dogs are very welcome. Throughout the year there are a variety of free activities and educational walks. These vary from pottery making, and traditional woodworking to a series of walks focused around trees and Highgate Wood's history. Hopefully there is something to interest all our visitors. There are limited spaces for disabled parking and all paths are wheelchair accessible.
