What is Green Heritage Site Accreditation

Recognising your park's rich history

Does your park or green space hold historical significance?

The Green Heritage Site Accreditation recognises these valuable sites, celebrating their historical and cultural significance alongside their environmental beauty.

Celebrate the hidden history of your green space

Almost every green space has a story to tell. Whether it was the site of a local or national historical event, has an interesting story behind its creation, has historic features or is named after a significant person, your park or green space likely holds a unique piece of history. By applying for Green Heritage Site Accreditation, you can demonstrate you recognise and care for the historic features and celebrate this heritage and share it with others.

The Green Heritage Site Accreditation acknowledges parks that excel in these areas:

Guardians of history – outstanding conservation standards ensure your historic features are well-maintained and protected.

Bringing history to life – your park actively highlights and interprets its historical significance, making it accessible to all.

A place for exploration – you encourage visitors to appreciate and interact with the park's rich past, fostering a deeper connection.

Preserving authenticity – the park's historic character and visual appeal are meticulously maintained, showcasing its unique charm.

Understanding the past, inspiring the future – you demonstrate a clear understanding of the historical landscape design and effectively communicate its story to visitors.

Qualifying for the Accreditation

The only requirement is that you hold a Green Flag Award and your green space is at least 30 years old or contains historic features.
