The Green Flag Award is proud to announce the launch of the Green Flag Award Academy—a new professional development initiative designed to support and future-proof the skills of the UK’s green space workforce and provide learning opportunities for the whole Green Flag Award network.

Our parks and green spaces are only as vibrant as the people who care for them. From local authority grounds teams and horticultural students to dedicated ‘Friends of’ volunteer groups, the expertise required to maintain our award-winning landscapes is more vital than ever.
Addressing new challenges
The sector is facing evolving pressures, including climate resilience and shifting community needs. The Academy has been developed to bridge the professional development gap, providing a dedicated home for learning, certification, and growth.
Our mission is to support the people doing the work today and inspire the next generation, ensuring that the skills used to manage our world-class spaces remain at the highest standard.
What the academy will offer
The Academy provides a blended learning approach tailored for professionals and volunteers at all career stages:
-
Study tours: Visits to parks and green spaces demonstrating industry best practice.
-
Knowledge Hub: Access to ‘day in the life’ case studies, technical reading materials and peer-to-peer insights.
-
Flexible training: A mix of virtual and in-person opportunities designed to fit around a busy outdoor schedule.
While the Academy’s primary focus is on grounds maintenance and horticulture professionals and students, it also serves as an invaluable resource for land trusts and ‘Friends of’ volunteer groups to gain deeper industry insights.
