Winners from six different organisations all across the country were awarded with the accolade. From Mexico City to Monterrey, this year truly established Mexico as one of the leading countries for parks management in the world. The winners were announced at the 2024 Congreso Parques in Merida, an event organised for Latin America by The National Association of Parks and Recreation of Mexico (ANPR Mexico).
Architect Juan Pablo Luna, General Director of Metropolitan Ecological Park of León "Eliseo Martínez Pérez" said:
“Receiving the Green Flag Award is a testament to Parque Cárcamos' quality and commitment to sustainability and the well-being of the León community. This recognition not only enhances the park’s reputation but also encourages greater interest and participation from citizens in its conservation and responsible use. Being the first park to be certified in the city of León, the state of Guanajuato, and the Bajío region fills us with pride for our efforts and positions us as promoters of best practices in parks, always with the clear goal of providing high-quality spaces for families.”
La Agencia Metropolitana de Bosques Urbanos del AMG and San Pedro Parques picked up multiple awards for various sites, more than doubling on the previous year – an impressive achievement by international standards.
ANPR Mexico has set out to achieve international standards for urban parks using the Green Flag Award, with the goal of transforming them into healthy, protected, and safe spaces throughout Latin America. Since June 2019 they been partnered with Keep Britain Tidy to operate and promote the Green Flag Award in Mexico.
Vitoria Martin, CEO of ANPR Mexico said:
"This certification not only recognizes the dedication of administrators, staff, and volunteers behind these spaces, but also encourages ongoing improvements in parks and green areas for the benefit of the communities that enjoy them. We’re delighted that so many Mexican parks are being acknowledged this year for meeting these international standards. At ANPR México, we are committed to continuing to raise the quality of parks throughout Latin America."
