Green Flag Award flags upcycled into tote bags!

03 June 2025

UK Environmental charity keep Britain Tidy has been working with Shropshire based Calluna Upcycling to upcycle a number of leftover Green Flag Award flags from previous years.

The limited supply of tote bags will be used to promote the Green Flag Award programme at the upcoming Canadian Inclusive Green Spaces Symposium: Enhancing Access to Municipal Parks in Canada taking place in Saskatoon on 11th - 13th June.

Guessing the exact number of flags needed in any given season is a difficult task. Especially outside the UK where applications take place at multiple different times of year.

Calluna Upcycling's USP is to "Save fabric from landfill, Help the environment and Give to Charity - All in One", and the company donates 10% of sales to local charity Severn Hospice.

Carl McClean - international Development Manager for the Green Flag Award said:

"I'm so pleased that we have found a second life for some of our leftover Green Flag Award flags. This new development fits in well with our ethos of reducing impact on the environment and embracing Keep Britain Tidy's "Waste Less" mantra.

As there is only a limited number of tote bags being produced they will not be widely available. However future opportunities for recycling, upcycling and reducing waste within the programme are ongoing.

The Green Flag Award continues to grow around the world. The 2024-25 season saw an amazing 2,531 winners from 19 countries. This included first time awards in Seattle (USA), Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), Malaga (Spain), Toowoomba (Australia), Istanbul (Turkey), Lempäälä (Finland) and London (UK).
