Coventry University Campus: Best Climate Change Adaptation Project 2024

Meet The Winners - Best Climate Change Adaptation Project 2024

From 'grey morass' to 'green oasis.’

Coventry University Campus has been awarded this year’s Best Climate Change Adaptation Award for the groundbreaking transformation of its city centre campus.

By demolishing two outdated buildings, the university has created a vibrant, biodiverse green space that not only enhances the campus environment but also contributes significantly to the fight against climate change.

The project has breathed new life into the campus, transforming a once-concrete landscape into a thriving green oasis. The new green spaces feature:

  • Biodiversity-friendly planting – a diverse range of plants, including wildflowers and fruit trees, support local wildlife.
  • Pollinator hubs – the campus now provides essential habitats for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
  • Edible gardens – open to all, these gardens offer fresh, locally-sourced produce.
  • Social spaces – the green spaces provide tranquil areas for relaxation and community gatherings.

“The new green spaces align with the university's vision to transform the campus from a 'grey morass' into a 'green oasis.'”

Jamie Whitehouse, Coventry University

Environmental impact

The environmental benefits of this transformation are far-reaching:

  • Reduced carbon emissions - the demolition of the buildings has eliminated significant energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.
  • Improved air quality – the new green spaces help to absorb pollutants and improve air quality.
  • Reduced urban heat island effect – the green spaces help to cool the surrounding area.
  • Enhanced biodiversity – the project has created new habitats for wildlife and increased biodiversity.
  • Sustainable drainage – the green spaces help to manage rainwater runoff and reduce the risk of flooding.

The project has won a number of other awards, including the DEFRA Bees’ Needs Champions Award 2023 and Bronze and Silver Hedgehog Friendly Campus Awards, and has played host to a number of events for Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

A community hub

The new green spaces have not only transformed the campus but have also become a valuable asset to the wider community. They host a variety of cultural events, educational activities, and community gatherings, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Coventry University Campus's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility sets a shining example for institutions worldwide. By embracing innovative green solutions, they have created a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
