Meet The Winners - Team of the Year (Park Staff)

A testament to dedication and passion

This year, the Green Flag Award for Team of the Year recognises two exceptional teams: the Bradgate Park Trust staff team and the Wirral Country Park-based Rangers.

These dedicated teams have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their parks, going above and beyond to create exceptional visitor experiences and protect precious natural habitats.

Bradgate Park Trust staff team

Bradgate Park, a beloved destination in Leicestershire, has welcomed over 750,000 visitors in the past year, attracted by its stunning landscapes, historic ruins, and diverse wildlife. Behind its success lies a dedicated team of rangers, wardens, office staff, and café workers who tirelessly work to maintain and enhance the park.

Bradgate park has been designated a National Nature Reserve, recognising its ecological importance. And over 80 new trees have been planted to enhance the park's biodiversity.

Extensive archaeological surveys have also been conducted at the Bradgate House ruins, uncovering valuable insights into the site's past. And the iconic Old John Tower, a historic landmark, was restored to its former glory.

The Visitor Centre has now welcomed over 85,000 visitors, including over 27,000 to the ruins and Old John Tower. The team has actively engaged the community through a successful volunteer programme, with over 18,000 volunteer hours contributed.

The team partnered with local mental health providers to deliver a new wellbeing activity project, promoting mental health and wellbeing. Numerous school visits and educational programmes were conducted, inspiring future generations. And the team has also prioritised continuous professional development, ensuring that staff skills and knowledge remain up-to-date.

The team's passion for the park is evident in their dedication to balancing conservation efforts with visitor enjoyment. They have successfully created a new conservation area for ground-nesting birds and consistently delivered a positive visitor experience.

Wirral Country Park-based Rangers

The Wirral Country Park-based Rangers manage a diverse range of habitats, including grasslands, woodlands, beaches, and heathlands. They are responsible for maintaining these areas, delivering public events, and providing visitor services.

As frontline staff, the Rangers provide crucial visitor services, including first aid and emergency response. They actively engage with the community through school visits, community events, and partnerships with local organisations. And by working closely with volunteers, they have successfully maintained and enhanced the park's natural beauty.

The Rangers have undertaken significant conservation projects, such as restoring freshwater habitats and managing grasslands to support biodiversity. They have also supported the local community through initiatives like Yoga in the Park and Dementia Wellbeing Walks, promoting health and wellbeing.

Despite increased visitor numbers and challenges like anti-social behavior, the Rangers have adapted and maintained high standards. Their commitment to protecting and enhancing Wirral Country Park is truly commendable.

The Rangers' dedication to their work is evident in their commitment to providing a high-quality visitor experience while protecting the environment. They have successfully balanced these competing demands, ensuring that Wirral Country Park remains a vibrant and accessible destination for all.

Both the Bradgate Park Trust staff team and the Wirral Country Park-based Rangers are exemplary examples of dedication, teamwork, and a passion for nature. Their hard work and innovative approach have made a significant impact on their respective parks and communities.
