Brierdene Wildlife Site
The Brierdene Wildlife Site is part of the Brierdene Community Green Space, which is situated close to the links at the north end of Whitley Bay. The area has been managed by the Friends of Brierdene for just over 14 years with the help and assistance of the North Tyneside Council.
The Brierdene is an urban green space and has been nicknamed locally as the Green Oasis, within this wildlife site can be found 1120 different species that grow, creep, crawl swim or fly.
These include 336 species of trees, wild flowers, grasses and herbs, 127 species of birds, 21 species of Butterfly and 17 species of Bumblebees have all been recorded, along with 173 different species of moths.
The area lies in a strategic wildlife corridor and is an important site for migrating birds, especially in the autumn.
The site is permanently open to the public, and a small car park is accessible from the main road. A stone observation platform within easy reach of the car park has been constructed on the dene top, giving the elderly and disabled a safe area in which the central area of the dene can safely be viewed.
The Friends maintain this site in accordance with a Conservation Management Plan, which insures that all improvements are suitable for the site, but are also maintained to provide a valuable green space for people in the local community and the surrounding areas.
