Hartshill Park
Hartshill Park is a well-loved park in the residential area of Oakengates, it was officially opened in July 1927. The park was designed by Commander BT Coote with money provided by the Miner’s Welfare fund. The park is typical of similar welfare grounds of the period. The park was originally a colliery spoil tip leveled to create a recreational space.
In 1928 the Grade II listed War Memorial gates were officially unveiled and handed over to the Council. The wrought iron gates hang on massive stone pillars and the names of the local men killed during the First World War appear on bronze panels on each side of the main gates.
