Connaught Gardens and Peak Hill Slope

Connaught Gardens in Sidmouth offers a unique experience to sample the delights of a 1930s 'Arts and Crafts Movement' garden which has been maintained in its original form since 1934. The gardens were designed and constructed by the famous arts and crafts centre at Dartington Hall near Totnes and consist of a series of small secluded 'garden rooms', each with it's own character. There is something for all keen gardeners in Connaught Gardens. Collections of exotic plants which thrive in the mild climate, cacti and carnivorous plants in the recently rebuilt traditional greenhouse and award winning floral displays, including wildflower areas. A colour guide leaflet is available free at each entrance and from the Sidmouth Tourist Information Office. For visitors looking for relaxation, there are regular concerts to listen to on the bandstand, a platform to admire the picturesque views looking over Sidmouth, and the very popular Clock Tower Café. Peak Hill Slope offers a gradual buffer away from the formal attractions of the gardens towards the countryside and heathland beyond. There is a steep, grassy slope with plenty of seating that has stunning views in both directions along the World Heritage Site 'Jurassic Coast', and space for children to play games and families to have a picnic. The South West Coast Path runs through Peak Hill Slope, making it a popular stopping point on a long walk. Formality and space - Connaught Gardens and Peak Hill Slope has something for everyone and is open all day, every day at no charge.
