The Oval Bandstand and Lawns

Nestled on the clifftop in Cliftonville, Margate, The Oval Bandstand & Lawns is a unique community-managed green space, offering breathtaking sea views and a dynamic programme of cultural, ecological, and wellbeing activities. Operated by GRASS Cliftonville CIC, The Oval is a thriving hub for the local community, blending heritage, nature, and public engagement in an accessible and inclusive environment.

Spanning over four acres, The Oval features a historic bandstand and amphitheatre, expansive lawns, and a newly developed wellness garden and ecology hub. It is home to an array of ecological initiatives, including Tiny Forests, wildflower meadows, and a multi-species hedgerow, enhancing biodiversity and creating wildlife corridors. Sustainability is at the heart of its management, with a focus on native planting, habitat restoration, and community-led conservation efforts.

The site hosts year-round events, from live music, theatre, and cultural festivals to fitness classes and environmental workshops, ensuring that people of all ages and backgrounds can engage with and enjoy the space. The Oval Ecology Group, made up of local volunteers, plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing the site’s natural beauty, reinforcing the sense of community stewardship.

With a commitment to accessibility, sustainability, and inclusivity, The Oval Bandstand & Lawns is a shining example of a Green Flag Community Award site, where people, nature, and culture come together to create a truly special place for everyone to enjoy.
