Springfield Park (NEW)
Formerly the grounds of a 19thC family home and bought by the former Liverpool Corporation in 1907, this is a much-loved neighbourhood park. Subsequent development by the site-based Alder Hey Children’s NHS Trust, in partnership with Liverpool City Council has culminated, through a process of working with local residents and the Friends of Springfield Park, in a new park. With each phase opening and more improvements still to come, it provides vital facilities for the wellbeing of the local community, hospital visitors, staff and patients.
Sweeping paths and beds provide access between the older park and the new. It boasts an accessible play area of natural and formal equipment, as well as providing opportunities for recreational sport and personal fitness in the form of a Trim Trail, table-tennis table and Multi-Use Games Area. New pitches invite opportunities for junior football.
Historic features from the original park (notably a sandstone column commissioned by the owner to Lord Nelson) as well as modern sculpture can also be found and visitors can appreciate a health trail through the established woodland. Accessible from the park is the Liverpool Loop Line path which provides a crucial link onto this network.
As well as providing recreational activity, it also features new tree planting and a wildflower meadow helping to bring greater biodiversity. The Friends of Springfield Park host events and regular activity to support and sustain the park and enable the community to enjoy and benefit from this attractive greenspace.
