Sheffield Botanical Gardens
The gardens are situated one mile south of Sheffield city centre (Grid reference SK337 862). The site covers 19 acres and is set on a south west sloping aspect within a residential area close to local businesses, major hospitals and Sheffield University. The gardens are owned by Sheffield Town Trust and managed by Sheffield City Council, Parks and Countryside service on a long lease.
A central feature of the gardens are the sweeping lawns with mature trees which create a setting for the restored pavilions, an early metal and glass curvilinear structure. The grand central Broadwalk leading up to the glass pavilions is framed by colourful herbaceous borders. The splendid Gatehouse entrance arch provides a perfect entrance into the gardens from the main entrance at Clarkehouse Road.
The restoration of the gardens created and enhanced a series of botanically and horticulturally themed areas. The themes include evolution, seasonal interest and geographical areas. The gardens are responsible for three national collections: Weigela, Diervillea and Sarcococca.
