Abbey Park and Grounds

Abbey Park and Grounds Opened in 1882, this 89-acre Grade II listed Victorian Park is Leicester's finest. Rich in historical and archaeological relevance, the park provides an important reminder to Leicester's past. The beautiful River Soar runs through the centre, joining the Park to the Grounds. With its mature trees, shrubberies and high quality floral displays, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Amongst the many attractions are, pets corner and play area, café, friendship, Nectar and sensory garden, lavender maze, the lake, model railway, cricket, bowls and tennis courts. The stunning flower gardens are not to be missed. The whole park, together with the river and its banks host a variety of birds, fish and plants. Interpretation signs throughout assist the visitor. A full day would be required to fully explore all the attractions. Much loved by the whole community of Leicester, the park plays host to many events throughout the year, including multicultural festivals, light shows, fun fairs, bonfire and firework displays to name but a few. With regular User Group meetings, there is always an opportunity for the public to put forward their thoughts and concerns about the Park to park staff. Regular excavation work on the Leicester Abbey ruins in conjunction with the Leicester University Archaeological Services promote greater usage, interest and conservation of this important historical site.
