Runcorn Hill Park Local Nature Reserve

Runcorn Hill is a unique combination of Formal Park and Local Nature Reserve at the heart of industrial Runcorn. Once extensively used for quarrying, it is today a peaceful escape from its industrial backdrop and its elevation gives spectacular views to the Welsh Mountains, the Mersey Estuary and North Cheshire. Runcorn Hill LNR includes the largest area of lowland heath in North Cheshire. The woodlands, ponds and scrub along with its geological structure complete a unique mosaic of habitats. Remains of its quarrying past, together with the variety of habitats, offer an excellent resource for schools and colleges. An earlier quarry on the eastern side of the Hill is now a formal park that contains bowling greens. In 2004 a new bandstand was erected on the site of the old bandstand base at the heart of the formal park. Numerous art works around the site, from timber benches and way markers to sandstone sculptures, celebrate the area's wildlife and history. Following a successful application to Heritage Lottery Fund; £1.2m of capital improvements works commenced in 2013 (completed 2016). This work concentrated on improved visitor attractions and included an all new Café/Park Pavilion and car park, refurbishment of model boat pond, including model boat house, main paths and boundary /entrance works.
