Hatfield Road Cemetery

St Albans City and District Council is committed to the continuous improvement of its parks and green spaces, as part of its vision for Historic St Albans District as a a premier community. The management of Hatfield Road Cemetery fits in with three of its five key aims: To build a community, which is open, fair and inclusive. To work in partnership for the health and well-being of the community. To safeguard the environment The Council has written a new Management Plan for Hatfield Road Cemetery, which not only details the history and the management of the cemetery, but also recognises the wider environmental aspects and impact from a significant green space. Hatfield Road Cemetery was opened in 1884, and over 30,000 people have been buried there since that date. The cemetery includes a number of war graves, including military personnel from New Zealand, Australia and Canada, and the Council is proud to host an annual Anzac Day service at the war memorial in the centre of the cemetery. The cemetery is laid out in a formal design, but its impact is softened by major tree planting, large shrubs and hedges. It shares one boundary with the former railway line, now known as the Alban Way, which is part of the national cycle route 61, and forms part of the Council's green corridor network. The Council is further developing the environmental aspects, with a new Green Burial site, to open in 2009.
