Beyond distance - rethinking accessibility
For many years, access to parks and green spaces has been defined by proximity. Redefining Accessibility, developed by Your Park Bristol & Bath, shows that distance alone does not determine whether people use or feel able to use their local park.
Drawing on research with diverse ethnic minority communities in Bristol, the report highlights how accessibility is shaped by factors such as safety, maintenance, visibility and social experience. It shows that many people live near parks but still feel unable or unwelcome to use them.
A key contribution of the report is a three-tier framework for understanding accessibility, based on basic needs, emotional needs and the ability to use parks in culturally meaningful ways.
The findings highlight an opportunity for local authorities to design parks with and for communities, creating green spaces that are more welcoming, better used and more reflective of the people they serve.
