The first ever applicant in the USA - The Presidio of San Francisco won the award for the 6th consecutive year. Whilst Seward Park - the first municipal park in the USA to win the award; successfully met the international standard for a second year in a row.
Travis Beck, Chief Park Officer of the Presidio Trust said:
“We’re honored to be recognized once again with the Green Flag Award and to stand alongside parks around the world that are working toward the same goals”
“This award connects us to an international community committed to caring for public green spaces that are sustainable, accessible, and forward-looking. We’re proud to be part of that effort and hope more in the United States will join us.”
The Presidio is managed collaborative by the “Partnership for the Presidio” led by The Presidio Trust with the support of the US National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Recent projects include the Presidio Tunnel Tops, the opening of its new extension Outpost Meadow, and the completion of the MUNI 30 bus terminus – improving access for nearly 10 million visitors a year.
Seward Park, Managed by Seattle Parks and Recreation is a gem of the city’s green space portfolio: a 300-acre Olmsted-designed urban oasis in one of the city's most diverse neighbourhoods. Home to an Audubon Center, Seward Park Clay Studio, tennis courts, amphitheater, and swimming beach, Seward Park also features 120 acres of old growth forest, miles of hiking trails, and freshwater shoreline.
AP Diaz, Parks Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation said:
“Seward Park is a shining example of what a world-class park can be"
"Winning the Green Flag Award for the second year in a row is a testament to the park's exceptional standards in sustainability, community engagement, and biodiversity - supporting Seattle Parks and Recreation's commitment to creating a thriving environment."
North America now has three countries participating the programme annually: Canada which saw its first two wins from Calgary, Alberta in June. And Mexico showcased an impressive 30% increase in winners, with 21 parks ranging across eight organisations when announced by the National Association of Parks and Recreation in Mexico in September.
Carl McClean, International Development Manager for the Green Flag Award said:
“It’s inspiring to see The Presidio and Seward Park hold on to their certification of the award for another consecutive year. Achieving a Green Flag Award is a respectable achievement for any park organisation. But holding on to it shows ongoing dedication to managing their parks and green spaces to the highest international standards. Well done to everyone involved.”
Next year the programme celebrates it’s 30th year. Originating in 1996 and announcing just seven winners in England the following year. Now in 2025 over 2,500 winners are awarded annually from 23 countries globally.
In July Keep Britain Tidy announced 163 parks and green spaces around Europe that had achieved Green Flag Award status. This is in addition to the 2,250 UK winners that received their awards earlier that month.
And an inspiring story emerged from Ukraine earlier this month when Obolonsky Island in Kyiv won the award, despite facing extreme challenges during the ongoing war.
